India Walton is a native of Buffalo, New York. After a decades-long career as a Registered Nurse, India began organizing as a way to influence policy that addressed the root causes of inequities in social determinants of health. She has been a staunch advocate for criminal legal reform, improving access to healthcare, safe staffing, and affordable housing. In 2021 India rocked the political establishment in her hometown by challenging and unseating a four-term incumbent in the Democratic Primary for mayor of Buffalo. Since her loss to an unprecedented write-in campaign in the general election, she has continued to advocate for increased civic participation and policies that prioritize the poor and working class as Senior Advisor with RootsAction. India has been featured in several publications including Essence magazine, Teen Vogue, Rolling Stone, Forbes, and The New Yorker. She has spoken at The New School, Harvard University, Rutgers, Niagara University, and numerous national conferences. India is known for engaging and informative presentations and her ability to connect with audiences on a personal level. India’s experience in frontline healthcare and community activism offers a unique perspective on the intersections of health, racial, economic, and social justice.

Michael is a community organizer and economist who works as a cooperative developer and educator for Cooperation Buffalo. Michael began their professional relationship with Cooperation Buffalo as an intern while they were a graduate student at Buffalo State College, where they graduated with an M.A. in Applied Economics in December 2018. Their areas of interest include cooperative economics, radical political economy, and macroeconomic policy. Michael hopes that they can use their knowledge and experience to contribute to the democratization of Buffalo’s economy.

Emily has worked for over a decade at local and state-wide organizations working towards housing, environmental, racial and reproductive justice, including the ACLU of NY, PUSH Buffalo and Clean Air Coalition of WNY. Emily has been a member of local, national and international political education and organizing teams, including with People’s Action, Catalyst Project’s Anne Braden Program, Political Healers Project and GLC Change Makers. She believes deeply in a rigorous, disciplined and care centered organizing practice that builds community power to live in a just, dignified and joyful world we all deserve. Emily should have been a teacher and brings her passion and skills of popular and political education to her role as a worker-owner of Rose Jade Consulting. Emily holds a degree in Women and Gender Studies from Buffalo State College and has been published in Selves, Symbols, and Sexualities: An Interactionist Anthology. Emily is a Buffalo girl through and through, growing up in the working-class neighborhood of Riverside with her extended family and community. She lives in Riverside with her three children, Yael, Oliver and Muna, their three cats and pup, Loganberry.

Ghislain was born in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. Ghislain has a background in finance and has worked in the past with DHL account receivable and Bank Of Africa in Kenya. Ghislain has been working with The Working World since 2016, starting as a Project Steward and currently acting as Co-Executive director of the organization. Ghislain is also a business owner in Burkina Faso and on the board of Seed Commons. Ghislain is deeply committed to creating a more just and equitable world, redefining finance, eliminating income disparities, ending poverty and giving back power to the workers.

Joe joined the Cooperative Fund in 2021 to support cooperative lending in New York State. He previously coordinated the Workers to Owners program for the Democracy at Work Institute, convening a national collaborative of 35+ cooperative developers working to transition small businesses to democratic employee ownership. Prior to that he was the Finance Manager for consumer-owned GreenStar Food Co-op in Ithaca, a $20m business with 3 locations and more than 12,000 members. Joe’s formative years with the cooperative model were spent walking to 4am shifts in the fog as a worker-owner at Arizmendi Bakery in San Francisco, and as cooperative entrepreneur launching new bakeries for the Arizmendi Association of Cooperatives, which now has more than 200 worker-owners. He has a master’s degree in Culture, Ecology, and Sustainable Communities from the New College of California.

Krys Cail is a cooperator who has worked in a number of roles since she arrived in Ithaca NY in the early seventies to be a part of The Ithaca Project, an early worker and housing cooperative incubator. She has been, at various times, between other things, and not in this order: an Agricultural Economic Development Specialist for Cornell Cooperative Extension, A farm and rural business development consultant affiliated with Cooperative Development Institute and Center for Agricultural Entrepreneurship, Treasurer of GreenStar Cooperative Market, Teaching Assistant in a course on cooperatives at Cornell’s Department of City and Regional Planning, Co-planner of NY Cooperative Summits, Advocate to the Public Service Commission and rural municipal governments for cooperative community solar farms located on Town-owned land. When not working, Krys enjoys swimming, dancing, singing and reading nonfiction.

As Director of Technology Products at Obran Cooperative, Ethan collaborates with worker leaders across the cooperative to build technologies that serve our members, improve our operations, and bring the benefits of our community to even more workers. His work brings together participatory, collective processes with a streamlined focus on tangible results. A third generation workplace democracy advocate, Ethan brings to his work over 20 years experience designing and building web systems. His experience includes work for Obama’s senate and presidential campaigns, website and mobile application development for social enterprises and NGOs ranging from Seventh Generation to the American Academy for the Advancement of Science and NAACP, and numerous startups. He’s the father of 2 inspiring children, and in his spare time seeks every opportunity to adventure with them in the world, explore nature, dance, and make music.

Bathabile is a coach, mediator, organizational development specialist, and the founder of Untangled Resolutions, providing external ombuds and mediation services, workshops, process facilitation, and leadership coaching. Untangled Resolutions also provides interest-based complaint and conflict management system design and implementation services to higher education, hospitals, and other organizations. Bathabile earned her A.B. in Sociology, cum laude from Princeton University, her J.D. from Columbia Law School, and her graduate coaching certificate and M.S. in Leadership and Organizational Development from the Naveen Jindal School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas. Bathabile was born in South Africa, raised in Southern California, and is the human companion of five dogs and two cats.

Frank Cetera
Director, Business Transitions – Democracy at Work Institute (DAWI)English
Frank Cetera leads DAWI’s national work to build an infrastructure of support for business transitions to employee ownership. He comes to DAWI after 15 years as a Senior Business Advisor with the New York State Onondaga Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Syracuse, NY where he lives and works today. At the SBDC, he held an Advanced Advisor Certification in the area of Employee Ownership, and, as founding Chair, led the America’s SBDC Special Interest Section on Employee Ownership & Business Transitions. Frank holds a Masters of Science degree in Sustainable Systems from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania (along with a Masters of Forestry from the State University of New York). He practices his avocations for systems thinking and natural resources management as co-founder and President of the Alchemical Nursery Project, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation that restores and stewards vacant urban land for “ecological landscapes and lifestyles”, and as founder and resident of the Bitternut Urban Collective co-household which is currently transitioning itself into cooperative corporation community ownership. Frank has also served on the Board of Directors for the CDFI Syracuse Cooperative Federal Credit Union since 2010, and has led the organization as Chair since 2013.

Ecosystem Strategy Manager – Cooperative Fund of the NortheastEnglish
Johan Matthews is the Ecosystem Strategy Manager for the Cooperative Fund of the Northeast. In this role, Johan facilitates the development of equitable co-op ecosystems in emerging communities across the northeast. He also provides culturally informed technical assistance to ensure that communities traditionally excluded from economic investment can engage in cooperative enterprise. Johan joins CFNE after over a decade of collaborating with local leaders and institutions to design and implement community-based economic engagement strategies. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from SUNY at Buffalo, a Certificate of Graduate Study in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from Rockefeller College, as well as an M.S. in Strategic Design and Management from The Parsons School of Design Strategies.

Mike Zak
Cooperative Development Manager – Cooperation BuffaloEnglish
Mike Zak is the Cooperative Development Manager at Cooperation Buffalo. He is a seeker of knowledge, justice, and sustainability. He was the Co-Founder and a worker-owner of Gro-op, an aquaponic vertical farm, for the past 10 years. Mike co-created Gro-op as a model of what an ethical business could be: ever striving towards utilizing the most environmentally sustainable urban farming practices, empowering workers through democratic cooperative ownership, and investing in its community by providing on the job training programs for Opportunity Youth in Buffalo’s East and West Sides while working with local non-profits towards Food Apartheid eradication. Mike has been passionate about the cooperative movement for close to two decades. He was a Board member and Board Chair of the Buffalo Cooperative Federal Credit Union for 6 years as well as a member owner of several local cooperatives. Mike has also been an activist and organizer in many social, environmental, and racial justice organizations throughout his life which include being a Board Member and Board Chair of the WNY Peace Center, volunteering at Citizen Action, PUSH Buffalo, Buffalo ReUse, and The Foundry Buffalo. Mike has 20 years experience being a business owner and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy. He has worked as a Youth Educator at WNY YouthBuild teaching low-income Opportunity Youth, who had dropped out of High School, building trades & occupational skills. Most of all, Mike truly believes the best way to have a just and equitable society is through democracy and cooperative decision making.

Anh-Thu Nguyen
Director of Strategic Partnerships – Democracy at Work Institute (DAWI)English
Anh-Thu Nguyen is DAWI’s Director of Strategic Partnerships. She leads and supports innovations and strategic partnerships for worker cooperative creation, scale, and growth. She leads DAWI’s NYC work through the NYC Council-funded Worker Cooperative Business Development Initiative, providing consulting, education and technical assistance to emerging worker cooperatives and developers. Her work has encompassed international human rights law and policy, social enterprise, and sustainable fashion. She began her career with the UN Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials and the International Center for Transitional Justice before pivoting to social enterprise. She launched and has consulted on several sustainable brands in the prestige beauty and contemporary fashion spaces, including being on the founding team of MAKE Beauty. She studied Classics and Government at Georgetown University, received her JD from the University of Texas School of Law, and was named a 2022-23 Coro New York Immigrant Civic Leadership Fellow.

Nina Stender leads DAWI’s Rapid Response Cooperative Development Project, which creates pathways to entrepreneurship and stable, career-building work for vulnerable workers and immigrant communities. Her passion for worker ownership was shaped by her experience at the Brownsville Community Justice Center in Brooklyn, where she learned about worker co-ops as a tool for economic self-determination. Previously, Nina was the Senior Membership Manager at Certified Employee-Owned, where she supported employee-owned companies with communications, education, and marketing. Nina holds a BA in Social Studies and Government from Wesleyan University and is a graduate of the Certificate in Workplace Democracy and Community Ownership at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. She was selected for a Public Affairs Fellowship at the Coro New York Leadership Center in 2017-2018 and a Social Change Fellowship at the CUNY Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership in 2021-2022. Nina was raised in Hong Kong and is now based in the Hudson Valley, New York, where she formerly served as a board member of the Kingston Food Co-op and now serves as an advisor to Co-op Hudson Valley.

David Hammer is the Executive Director of the ICA Group and a leading practitioner in the employee ownership field. He has assisted in the conversion, launch and growth of dozens of employee-owned firms and social enterprises. David joined the ICA Group in 2008 and served as a Senior Business Consultant until assuming the position of Executive Director in June 2013. He has spent his career supporting workers in their efforts to achieve meaningful economic control over their lives. Prior to joining ICA, he served as Assistant Director of Research of 1199SEIU, the largest health care union on the east coast. Previously, he was a Senior Research Analyst for UNITE in New York City and the United Steelworkers of America in Pittsburgh. David has worked on a wide variety of projects throughout the country in industries as diverse as long term care, child care, industrial laundries, apparel distribution, food retail, tire manufacturing, temporary staffing, hospitality, aluminum can manufacturing, as well as various small manufacturing settings.

Ryan Demers is a Cooperative Development Specialist and a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) in the Cooperative Development Institute’s Business Ownership Solutions (BOS) Program. In this role, Ryan works with business owners to assess the feasibility of selling to their workers, and guides workers through a program of cooperative, business, and financial education as they plan a worker cooperative buyout. Ryan focuses on financial education, board training, management training, and designs customized workshops for clients based on their needs. Prior to joining CDI, Ryan was the General Manager at the North Country Food Co-op, the only full-service grocery store in downtown Plattsburgh, NY. During his time there, he grew the co-op to 16 employees and nearly $2MM in sales and successfully stewarded the business through the Covid pandemic. He brings great skills and experience in cooperative management and board development, conflict resolution, human resources, and financial analysis and education. Ryan’s formal education was in Atmospheric Science, but after graduate school, he decided to take a different path when he discovered a passion for the cooperative business model. Ryan serves as the vice president of the board of trustees for the Strand Center for the Arts in Plattsburgh, and is a member of the board of directors for the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA).

Fay Strongin joined the ICA Group in 2021 as a home care Business Developer and now directs ICA’s home care program, working with home care cooperatives and supporters across the country to build a thriving home care cooperative sector. Prior to joining the ICA Group, Fay served as a consultant for the NYC Office of the Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives supporting the Employee Ownership NYC initiative and worked at the Philadelphia Water Department where she led community engagement for Philadelphia’s green stormwater infrastructure plan. She previously worked in urban agriculture, as the founder of a queer, women-owned vegetable farm and CSA in Providence, Rhode Island. Fay has a BA in Political Science from Haverford College and a Master’s in City Planning from MIT, where her research focused on gentrification in small and mid-sized US cities.

Since joining DAWI in 2019 has led the organization’s communications and data programs while driving strategic priorities as a member of its senior leadership team. His diverse experience at DAWI includes guiding the organization’s COVID-related strategic refinement, training cooperative developers in the U.S. and East Africa, helping lead New York City’s business conversions response during COVID, and leading regranting programs for the city’s Worker Cooperative Business Development Initiative. Prior to joining DAWI, Julian led strategic storytelling campaigns focused on regenerative economics, impact investing, and family financial security. He began his career as a news editor and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Springfield College (Mass.). He lives in Queens, New York with his family.

Angela DeFelice (she/her) grew up in a rural, working class community in Western NY, and for 14 years has lived in and around Poughkeepsie (Lenape/Mohican territory). Community based work both in Ithaca, NY and Ocotal, Nicaragua led Angela to a decade-long career in agriculture. Her work with cooperatives started as a co-founder and worker-owner of Rock Steady Farm, a queer-owned cooperative farm rooted in social justice and food access in Millerton, New York. Since 2018, she has worked toward cooperative and community ownership in the region, and brings over 10 years of business management and consulting experience to her role as Managing Director & Senior Project Steward at Co-op Hudson Valley. Angela is motivated by the community wealth and power building potential of cooperatives, and is excited about moving the control of resources back into the hands of the community, where it belongs. Angela is a Good Work Institute Fellow and serves on the founding board of the Dutchess County-Poughkeepsie Land Bank.

Jason Spicer joined the CUNY faculty in 2023 from the University of Toronto’s downtown flagship campus, where he was a full-time tenure-track faculty member for five years, and was the founder and director of the Community Economies Lab. With a primary appointment at the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, he is also appointed at the Graduate Center in the Social Welfare PhD program. He holds a PhD in Political Economy from MIT, and his research, teaching, and practice-based work centers more democratic and sustainable approaches to developing the economy, with a particular focus on the social economy and community economic development. His research has been funded by government agencies and leading foundations, and has been published in a number of leading social science and public policy journals, such as Socio-Economic Review, Economic Development Quarterly, Housing Policy Debate, and the International Journal of Housing Policy. This work has been featured in media outlets such as The Washington Post, PBS Newshour, CBC, The Conversation, Governance, Grist, Fast Company, and Foreign Policy. His first book, on co-operatively owned businesses, was published by Oxford University Press, and his second book is under contract with Stanford University Press’ SSIR (Stanford Social Innovation Review) Book Series in the Stanford Business Books Imprint. Before becoming a professor, Jason had a 15-year career in the global urban development industry, based in New York City, working with local, national, and trans-national governments, as well private sector and third-sector organizations, in a variety of capacities.

She is passionate about building collective power, fostering economic and gender equity, and creating systems that are both just and sustainable.
